Italian architect and designer Piero Lissoni has been appointed artistic director of B&B Italia

His role at the company, one of Italy’s leading luxury furniture brands, will be that of developing the brand’s strategy and overseeing its ‘stylistic code’ and visual indentity as it seeks to strengthen its global image.

Lissoni is the head of his own architecture and design practice which is known for its tailored approach to design, elegantly pared back products that focus on proportion and attention to detail. He has worked for many prestige brands including Flos, Alessi and Kartell, and in recent years collaborated with B&B Italia on a number of products including the Dock sofa (pictured above) and Liagò storage system. He is already creative director for Alpi, Boffi, Living Divani, Lema, Lualdi, Porro and Sanlorenzo.

Lissoni’s appointment comes at a key time for B&B Italia. In 2018 the company, along with Flos and Louis Poulson, formed the group Design Holding. Largely backed by private equity firms, the group describes itself as ‘the largest global high-end design group with a European heritage’.

In late 2019, however, Giorgio Busnelli stepped down as chairman of B&B Italia, ending his family’s link to the company his father founded over 60 years ago. His departure followed that of Flos CEO Piero Gandini which ended the Gandini family’s involvement in the Italian lighting brand after almost 70 years.

Busnelli’s departure saw Gilberto Negrini, previously CEO of Italian furniture brand Kartell, become CEO of B&B Italia, and Gabriele del Torchio, CEO and president of parent group Design Holding, its chairman.

‘We are delighted and proud to welcome Piero Lissoni in the B&B Italia family and we are eager to start a new and important evolutionary chapter for B&B Italia with him,’ said Negrini. ‘We are confident that Piero will embody the values that since 1966 represent the brand: design, culture, innovation technology and research, contemporary lifestyle’.

Lissoni described his appointment as ‘a beautiful adventure!’ He continued: ‘I’m happy to start this new journey with a company that has written the history if Italian and international design, always remaining contemporary. B&B Italia is an integral part and one of the pillars of the model that the world longs for. A unique system made up of entrepreneurs with a vision capable of bringing together craftsmanship and industry, tradition and innovation, connections and collaborations. Well, I hope that this path we have taken together will lead us on one hand to affirm this heritage and on the other way open up new opportunities for the future…’
